(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) released the following statement today after the Senate defeated two of his cost-saving amendments to the “minibus” appropriations bill, HR 2112. Coburn amendment 800, reducing funding for Rural Development by $1 billion, failed by a vote 85 to 13. Roll call vote: here. Coburn amendment 801, eliminating funding for the Small Community Air Service Development Program, failed by a vote of 57 to 41. Roll call vote: here.
“Congress has yet again refused to adopt common-sense amendments that would end duplicative government programs and stop hard-earned taxpayer dollars from continuing to subsidize small airports that have proven to be insufficient and unsustainable. If we can’t do our jobs by cutting spending and inefficiencies today, we are never going to be able to address the long-term problems we’re facing,” said Dr. Coburn.
